Ontario Recognizes Innovative Literacy Leader
Posted: August 15, 2007
ONLC congratulations Michelle Eady!
The Ontario Native Literacy Coalition is very pleased and proud to
announce that
Michelle Eady, a
Native literacy practitioner with the Sioux Hudson Literacy Council in Sioux
Lookout, has been awarded the 2007 Council of the
Federation Literacy Award for
Ontario! (The press release from Premier Dalton McGuinty's office confirming her award
can be found at the end of this message.)
For those who are not familiar with this
annual award the Council of the Federation’s website gives the following
rationale.
“In order to bring recognition to achievements in literacy
in every province and territory, Premiers created a Council of the Federation
Literacy Award medallion. The award recognizes outstanding achievement,
innovative practice and excellence in literacy. Thirteen Council of the
Federation Literacy medallions are presented annually, one for each province
and territory. The Council of the Federation Literacy Award covers the entire
spectrum of the field, including family, Aboriginal, health, workplace and
community literacy and is given to recognize the excellence of educators,
volunteers, learners, and community organizations (including non-governmental
organizations) and businesses in each province and territory.”
The
Council of the Federation Literacy Award was created in 2004 and highlights a
different aspect of literacy each year.
In
2005 the award was awarded to Rita Buffalo, another Native literacy
practitioner from
Thunder Bay,
in the category of ‘community champion
of literacy’. In 2006 the award
recognized an ‘outstanding literacy volunteer’ and the category for 2007, which
Michelle won, was to recognize an ‘innovator in literacy’.
Michelle has been instrumental in
establishing distance education in the north using the Centra platform and
continues to be at the fore-front of literacy practice. She is also a passionate advocate for
literacy and the rights of learners. For

learning they are doing check out their website at www.siouxhudsonliteracy.com.

I am sure you will join us in congratulating
Michelle on winning this prestigious award for excellence in our field. Way to go, Michelle!!!
