The Ontario Native Literacy Coalition is pleased to introduce

Completing the Circle: Teaching Our First Teachers

Literacy and Learning for Aboriginal Families (LAFF)

This new family literacy program was developed by a volunteer Advisory Group over the past year and was based on  the Aboriginal Literacy and Parenting Skills (A-LAPS) model developed by Laureen MacKenzie and Elaine Cairns jointly with the Further Education Society of Alberta and Bow Valley College.

Recently the draft program was piloted successfully at five sites across Ontario and the results of their evaluations were used to make final adjustments to the program manual.

This resource is divided into eight (8) main sessions covering the following topic areas:

  • Speaking and Listening Skills

  • Passing on Our Values and Traditions

  • Schools and Our Children

  • Building Self-Esteem in Our Children

  • Discipline

  • Let's Talk About Food

  • Families as Teams

Each session contains many traditional elements including a Medicine Wheel teaching and an Aboriginal story related to the session topic.  A special thanks to Native artist Tanya Noganosh who created the original drawings that are used throughout the manual and Elder Vera White Eyes Jones who so willingly shared her wisdom and knowledge during the development of this resource.

Currently the resource is being readied for printing so it should be available later this spring.

If you would like a copy reserved for your use, please contact the ONLC office with your name, organization and contact information.
