The ONLC Friendship Award

The ONLC Friendship Award has been established by Katherine Shine in memory of Elva Lickers, a Native practitioner and member of the ONLC Board of Directors, who passed away in 2007.

On June 6th, 2008 during the Ontario Native Literacy Coalition's 20th Anniversary celebration, Katherine Shine made the public announcement of this new award.  Katherine, a member of the ONLC Board of Directors, personally established this award which will be symbolized by the beautiful stone carving of an owl shown above that was created by a prominent Native artist.

This award will be passed from practitioner to practitioner every year at the ONLC's AGM.  It will be the decision of the person holding the award at the time, who it will be passed to next.

As Katherine Shine noted, 'While we all have different programs and locations, trials and tribulations, what we always have and can count on are our "friends" within the field; they lift our spirits, lend us a helping hand and we are never alone.'

In memory of Elva Lickers the award will begin it journey with her daughter, Angel Lickers, a practitioner with the Six Nation Achievement Centre in Ohsweken, Ontario.

Angel will be presented with the award at the ONLC's Annual General Meeting on November 22, 2008.
