Ontario Native Literacy Coalition

Coming soon - another new resource

Posted: December 10, 2008

The Ontario Native Literacy Coalition is proud to announce that a new Aboriginal Self-Management/Self-Direction (SM/SD) program has recently been developed and is just going into its piloting phase.

At the fall 2008 Practitioner Training Conference delegates got a sneak preview of the draft version of a new resource 'Self-Management, Self-Direction:  Back to Basics' which consists of a learner workbook and Facilitator's Guide.

Based on interest expressed at the conference a group of 5-6 pilot sites are being chosen to work with the draft materials beginning in January 2009.  Their feedback and suggestions will be used to fine-tune the program which ONLC hopes to have ready for the final printing in May/June 2009.  The anticipated release date is July 1st.

This new program consists of ten chapters titled:

         Transitions                                           Mind, Body & Spirit

         Self-Confidence/Self-Esteem               Attitudes & Thoughts

         Self-Defeating Behaviours                   Decision Making

         Goal Setting                                        Communications

         Feeling & Emotions                             Time Management

This program is based on the traditional Medicine Wheel model of the Stages of Learning and encourages an holistic approach in the classroom.  Within each chapter there are a series of exercises and activities, along with a number of alternate presentation suggestions, designed to promote effective learning and each one is marked to indicate the learning style(s) it addresses.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this program watch this website for the announcement that it is ready. You may also contact the ONLC directly to have your name put on an 'Expressions of Interest' listing and you will be contacted as soon as it is available for distribution.  Email should be directed to onlcadm@bellnet.ca, phone calls can be made toll-free within Ontario to 1-800-971-2255 or locally to 519-371-5594.
